The Nice and Accurate Thoughts of Ben Eubank (re: comics)

Hello! This week is full of great issues! We see the return of Cliff Chiang to Wonder Woman, the second issue of Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre, and another chapter to Saga. This is what I read!

Wonder Woman – This month brings Cliff Chiang back for the art and it is fantastic! We meet Artemis and Demeter and it is awesome! We learn that Hera has made a deal with some of Zeus’s children to get his unborn child into her possession… in exchange for Apollo’s ascension to the throne of Olympus. Between the art and story, this issue was my favorite this week. 5/5

Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre – Issue two follows Laurie and her friends trying to make a life for themselves free from their parents. Laurie comes across an insidious plan to test a new drug and decides that she must stop it. This issue is very good and reinforces my opinion of being my favorite Before Watchmen series. 5/5

Dominique Laveau Voodoo Child – This month introduces Dominique to her father, Kalfu, and gives us a lot of history about how the Voodoo Court came into being. She finally comes out of her trials and is known to be the true Queen. It should be interesting to see what happens now that she isn’t being blamed for her aunt’s death. 3/5

Fantastic Four – This issue picks up with Reed and T’Challa venturing deep into Wakanda’s history and inner workings. While they travel to find out what T’Challa’s dreams mean, Susan and Shuri ready themselves for the battle against Anubis. This was a really good issue that ties the families together even more. I’m anxious to see what’s going to happen next. 3/5

Journey into Mystery – This month’s issue wraps up the war in Otherworld… and not to everyone’s liking. Loki, Leah and Daimon become the “Trio of Trickery” and do some devious things to both sides of the war. This issue was pretty sad at the end as we bid adieu to someone pretty awesome. 3/5

Justice League – This month’s issue was leaps and bounds better than last month in my opinion. There was some pretty epic fighting going on between members of the League that was really neat to see. After things calm down, they start to figure out why Graves is coming after them and more questions are raised. 4/5

Red Hood and the Outlaws – Issue eleven shows us more of Koriand’r’s backstory. We finally find out how she came to be a prisoner and why she hesitates to help her people. We also get to meet her sister! As always, this is an excellent story and leaves me really excited for the next issue! 5/5

Saga – Another chapter has arrived and is not disappointing in the least. Marko and Alana make some progress in escaping; while Prince Robot receives some news. Things may be picking up more speed soon as there was a lot going on in this issue… Next month just cannot come quickly enough! 4/5

Star Trek – Issue eleven reintroduces us to the Tribbles! Tribbles, tribbles, tribbles! This issue was a lot of fun! Hopefully we see more Klingons in the next issue! 4/5

Star Trek: The Next Generation / Doctor Who – The third issue deepens the mystery of how the Borg and Cybermen have come to be in the same universe. We see a flashback to a meeting James Kirk had with the Doctor and the Cybermen while he was in his fourth regeneration. The change of art really made me happy… I do not particularly care for the photo-realistic art being used for this series right now. Overall, it was a decent issue. 3/5

Supergirl – This issue shows Kara that she is a target wherever she goes. She goes on a sort of date with Siobhan’s brother and ends up in a fight with a new enemy. At the end, she decides to leave in order to keep people safe. It looks like we’ll be seeing Superman in the next issue! 3/5
